The honest bit

Why only one of the six is metered

Most detection tools charge for everything because a server somewhere loads a model into memory, receives your file, runs an inference and sends a number back. Every one of those steps has a bill attached. Once that is the shape of the product, a usage meter is not greed — it is arithmetic.

Five of our six tools are built the other way round. The model, the runtime and the whole analysis are downloaded to your browser on first use and run there. The marginal cost of your hundredth image check is the same as your first: nothing. So metering them would be theatre, and they stay unlimited on every paid plan.

The plagiarism checker cannot work that way. Finding out whether a sentence exists somewhere on the internet means asking an index of the internet, and nobody indexes the web for free. A thousand-word document costs us about thirty-eight searches. That is the bill a plan pays, and it is the only one.

It also settles the privacy question without asking to be trusted. Your images, video and audio are never transmitted — there is no upload endpoint for them. Open your network tab during a check and you can confirm that in about ten seconds, which beats a sentence in a policy. The plagiarism checker is the exception and says so plainly: text has to leave the browser to be searched against the web.

Detection stays free. The score, the passage map, the Content Credentials check and both export formats are the product, not a sample of it. A better model, when one arrives, reaches the free tier first.

Your files stay on your device. No paid feature becomes a reason to start uploading pictures, video or audio. Shareable links already show the pattern: the analysis travels inside the link and the file never moves.

The free tier keeps working. Free plagiarism checks search a real index and return real sources. It is a narrower index than the paid one, and the result tells you so every time rather than letting a low percentage read as a clean bill of health.

What people ask before paying for something

This page used to say there would never be a meter. What changed?
It did say that, and it is fair to hold us to it. What it was promising was that detection would not be metered, and that has not changed: image, video, voice, music and text checks are unlimited on every paid plan and generous on the free one, because they cost us nothing to serve. What we did not have at the time was a plagiarism checker, which is the first tool we have built that carries a real per-check cost. Rather than quietly degrade it or bury a limit, it gets a price.
What can I actually do without paying?
Fifty detector checks with no account at all — no email, no card, no sign-up screen. After that, signing in with an email raises it to two hundred a month. Plagiarism is three checks a month against Wikipedia and open academic records, which genuinely catches the most-copied source on the internet but is not the whole web, and the result says so on every run.
Why is the free plagiarism check limited to Wikipedia?
Because searching the whole web costs about two cents a document and we would rather charge for it honestly than pretend a limited search is a full one. Wikipedia is free to query and is where a large share of copied text actually comes from, so the free tier does something real. What it must not do is return zero percent on an essay copied from a blog and let that read as proof of originality — which is why the coverage is stated on the result itself, not in a footnote.
How did you set the prices?
By reading the competition's pricing pages. The individual tier averages $14.98 a month across Quetext, Copyleaks, Originality.ai and GPTZero, and $11.00 a month billed annually. Ours are 40% under both, which is where $8.99 and $79 come from. We can do that because five of our six tools have no marginal cost, not because we are running the plagiarism checker at a loss.
Can I really spend the whole year's allowance in two months?
Yes, and that is the point of the yearly plan rather than an oversight in it. It is one balance for twelve months, not twelve monthly balances that expire. If your work arrives in bursts — a dissertation season, an audit, a content backlog — spend it when the work is there. If you run out early, top-up packs are the same rate as the plan.
Is there a per-check charge on top?
No. The allowance is the whole cost and there is no surcharge for a long document, a difficult file or a batch. Long documents are split into request-sized parts automatically and merged back into one report; you are charged for the words, not the number of parts we needed to check them in.
What happens when I hit the limit?
The detectors keep working, because they are not metered. The plagiarism checker falls back to the free Wikipedia search and tells you it has, so you always get something rather than an error page. You can top up, upgrade, or wait for the reset.
Do you keep my documents?
Text you submit for a plagiarism check is sent to our endpoint, split into search phrases and discarded. It is not stored, not added to any archive of submitted work, and not used to train anything. That last part matters more than it sounds: some checkers keep every submission and match later students against it, which quietly makes you the product. Files for the five on-device detectors never reach us at all.
Can I use it for paid work?
Yes, on any plan including free, and no separate licence is needed. What you cannot do is present a result as a certified determination or lean on one alone in a decision that penalises somebody. The accuracy page sets out those limits in full, and they are not fine print.
I need more than the yearly plan.
