How a text check actually runs

There is no upload and no queue. Nothing downloads because you visited. Paste the writing or hand over a file, and the analyser loads into that tab only once you ask for a result.

One document or a folder of them. Any length past fifty words, and PDF, Word and plain text are all read here in the browser, so a marked essay never leaves the machine it was opened on.

02It is split into passages

Text is cut at sentence boundaries into blocks of about two hundred words, because that is what fits the analysis window and because a passage is something you can actually go and read.

03Every passage gets its own score

The document comes back tinted block by block, with an overall figure weighted by length. A part-written essay shows as exactly that rather than as one flat average.

Reading the number

What the score says, and how firmly

Every passage gets a likelihood from 0 to 100, and the headline figure is those passage scores weighted by length. The five bands and the decision line at 65 are the ones the picture detector uses, so a 61 means the same kind of thing here as it does on a photograph.

Read the passage strip as well as the number. A document at 55 made of passages scoring 20 and 95 is a different finding from one where every passage scores 55, and only the first of those is worth a conversation about a specific paragraph.

90 – 100 Strong AI signal As firm as this analysis gets on a block of text. Work on the basis that a model wrote most of this, and ask for the drafting history.

The bands are fixed and published, so a 72 next term means what a 72 means today.

None of it is proof. It is a measurement of how writing is put together, and people who write plainly and to a formula will always score higher than people who do not.

Under the hood

What the analysis is actually reading

It reads how the writing is put together, not what it says. Generated prose has habits that survive editing: sentence lengths that cluster instead of varying, a preference for hedged and balanced constructions, transitions arriving on schedule, and a vocabulary that stays in the middle of the register from beginning to end. Those are statistical properties of the text, and they can be measured.

The analysis was trained on a public benchmark built for exactly this comparison, covering many generators rather than one, and it reads about two hundred words at a time. That window is why the document is split into passages, and it turns out to be the more useful shape of answer anyway.

Nothing about a document's origin, file name, metadata or formatting is consulted. Two files with identical words score identically, whatever produced them.

This measures a register, not an author. Writing that is deliberately plain, formulaic or heavily edited scores higher whoever produced it, and that is the single most important thing to hold on to before a result changes anything for a real person.

What is measured, and what is not

Accuracy

Where it holds up, and where it slips

On paragraphs of a hundred words or more the separation is wide: human writing lands in the twenties and thirties, generated writing in the nineties, and very little arrives in between.

Below fifty words the separation collapses, which is why fifty words is a floor rather than a suggestion. On one and two sentence inputs the same analysis returned figures in the sixties and eighties for writing a person plainly produced, and a tool that accuses somebody on the strength of a sentence is worse than one that declines.

What pushes a result upwards without any model involved

  • Writing to a formula: five-paragraph essays, structured reports, exam answers
  • Prose edited hard for clarity, or run through a grammar tool
  • Technical and academic registers, which are impersonal by design
  • Writing by somebody working in a second language
  • Translations, which flatten the rhythm of the original
  • Boilerplate a person genuinely wrote once and reuses

A false positive here has a cost nothing else on this site carries: a student or a writer accused of something they did not do. That is the reason for the fifty-word floor, the passage strip instead of one number, and the middle band that says inconclusive rather than guessing.

A false negative is the easier failure to live with and the easier one to cause. Asking a model to write in a specific voice, then editing the result, moves a passage down the scale, and there is no honest way to claim otherwise.

Read the result as a reason to ask a question, never as an answer. The question that settles it is almost always about drafts, notes and the ability to talk about the argument.

What it will not do

  • Prove who wrote something, or that anybody wrote it dishonestly
  • Name the model behind a passage, or say which service produced it
  • Score reliably below fifty words, which is why it declines instead
  • Read a scanned PDF, which holds pictures of words rather than words
  • Detect paraphrasing tools as a separate thing from ordinary editing
  • Stand alone in an academic, employment or disciplinary decision

What actually settles it

Drafting history beats any detector. Version history in a document, notes and outlines, a browser's own revision trail, and a five-minute conversation about the argument will each tell you more than a score will. For coursework, asking for the working is both more reliable and fairer than asking a model about a model.

This is the part where most AI content detection tools ask you to trust a policy. There is no policy to trust here, because there is no transfer. It matters particularly on this page: the text people check is usually somebody else's, often submitted in confidence, and several well-known checkers keep what they are given and use it.

What to look for before you even run a check

A measurement is the reliable path, but generated prose has tells a careful reader catches, and knowing them makes the score easier to interpret rather than harder.

  1. Paragraphs of near-identical length, one after another
  2. Every list arriving in threes, with each item the same weight
  3. Confident sentences that survive having their subject swapped out
  4. Hedging attached to claims that need none, and none attached to claims that do
  5. A closing paragraph that restates the opening without adding anything
  6. Specific detail that is plausible and unverifiable, especially names and figures
  7. Citations that look right and do not resolve
  8. No digressions, no asides, nothing the writer found interesting
  9. Vocabulary that never drops into how somebody would actually say it
  10. The same register from first line to last, through subjects that should change it

Every one of these appears in ordinary careful writing, particularly under exam conditions or in a second language. Use them to decide what to check, not to reach a conclusion.

Using it

Is this AI content detector free?
Yes, and without an asterisk. There is no account, no card, no trial and no word cap. The analysis runs on your own processor rather than on a server we rent, which is the whole reason it can be offered at no cost. The only limits are technical: fifty words at the bottom, and your own patience at the top.
Does the text get uploaded?
No. Pasted text stays in the field. A dropped file is parsed by your browser, and the analysis runs in that same tab. Nothing is posted to this site or a third party, which matters here more than most places: several well-known checkers keep what they are given and reuse it.
What file types can it read?
PDF, Word .docx, Markdown, RTF and plain text, all parsed in the browser. Old .doc files and Pages documents are refused by name rather than read badly. A scanned PDF holds pictures of words rather than words, so it is refused too, with an explanation rather than a zero.
Why does it need fifty words?
Because below that the analysis stops separating. Measured on one and two sentence inputs, writing a person plainly produced came back in the sixties and eighties. Fifty words is where the gap between human and generated prose opens wide enough to report, so shorter text is declined rather than guessed at.
Can I check several documents at once?
No. There is no word cap, no file cap and no daily quota on this tool. Add a whole folder of submissions and each is scored in turn, with a tab per document above the readout. A dissertation takes proportionally longer than an essay but is not refused, and the only cost is your own time.

What the result means

What does the score actually measure?
It measures how closely a passage resembles generated writing in its construction, on a 0 to 100 scale with the decision line at 65. It is a statement about register and structure, not about authorship, and certainly not about honesty. The overall figure is the passage scores weighted by length.
Can it tell me which model wrote something?
No, and no honest tool can. Attribution would need a signature unique to one model that survives editing, and none exists. What can be said is whether the writing carries the general shape of generated prose, which is a far weaker claim than naming a product.
Does a low score prove a person wrote it?
No. A low score is the absence of a detectable signal, not evidence of authorship. Asking a model to write in a particular voice, then editing the result, moves a passage down the scale, and heavy paraphrasing does the same. A low score means the tool found nothing, not that there is nothing.
Why was my own writing flagged?
Usually register. Writing to a formula, editing hard for clarity, working in a second language, or writing in a technical style all move a score upwards with no model involved. Look at the passage strip: if every block reads the same, that is a style; if one block stands out, that block is the question.
What does the passage strip show?
The document read back with each block tinted by its own score. It exists because a single average hides the useful information. A document at 55 made of blocks scoring 20 and 95 is a different finding from one where every block scores 55, and only the first points at a specific paragraph.

Limits and fairness

Can I use this to fail a student?
No, and please do not. A score is a reason to ask a question, never an answer to one. Every published detector in this category has a false-positive rate, and the people it lands on hardest are those writing in a second language or to a rigid format. Ask for drafts and talk about the argument.
Is it fair to writers using English as a second language?
No, not entirely, and that is worth stating plainly. Writing produced in a second language is often more formal and more regular than a first-language draft, and both of those push a score upwards. Published research has found the same bias across this whole category of tool, including the paid ones.
Does editing AI text lower the score?
Yes, and substantially. Rewriting sentences, varying their lengths and adding specific detail all move a passage down the scale, because those are the properties being measured. That is a real limit rather than a bug: the analysis reads how writing is constructed, and editing changes how it is constructed.
Does it detect paraphrasing tools?
No, not as a separate finding. A paraphraser rewrites generated text into something that reads more like a person, which is exactly what pushes a passage below the line. If a document was generated and then run through one, expect a lower score than the original would have produced.
Are results saved anywhere?
Yes, in your own browser and nowhere else. Each check is written to local storage on this device so you can reopen it from the results page. We never receive them, they do not sync between devices, and clearing your site data deletes them permanently.
